Betting on football is certainly in full swing given the time of the season. No doubt, you too want to lay your hands on the booty. The problem for beginners is that the betting world is filled with so many jargons, that they end up getting confused and in the end up making the wrong decisions and lose.

Don’t worry though; here I’ll be clearing a few of the supposedly difficult concepts. Understanding these will also help you in betting in other sports. Once you get the hang of it (trust me, it’s not all that difficult), you will be up and running in no time. So let’s go.

The Point Spread

When you hear it for the first time, you may think that it is the projected victory margin by which a particular team will beat the other, but this is not the case. In reality this is a moving target and a tool in the hands of the bookmaker to adjust the wagering so as to earn maximum money.

However, the advantage of the spread betting to you is that the team that you are betting on doesn’t necessarily have to win. All you need to do is cover the spread. This way even if your team loses but your spread is nearer to the prediction, you still end up winning.

Over/Under

This is one of the simplest concepts to understand even if you are new to betting on football. Here instead of simply betting on the outcome of the game, you bet on the total number of goals that will be scored in the game.

You predict a total and wager the total goal score will be either over that total or under it. For example, you predict that the total goal score will be either under 5 goals or over it. Hence, the name over/under. If the goal score is exactly 5 then it is a tie, also called a push.

Parlay

A parlay is generally a composite of two or more types of betting over more than a single match, perhaps for two or three matches or even over an entire football tournament. For those betting on football, this is a very common concept and a way or earning more money.

Generally the greater the number of teams involved, the greater the payout. For example, a 2-team parlay generally pays 13 to 5, and a parlay over three teams can pay 6 to 1. Parlay bets attract more bets because here, the bet is usually low and the payoff can be significantly higher if you win.

Teasers

A teaser is nothing but a wager which consists of two or more propositions, i.e. matches instead of just one. In teasers, you are allowed to spread the points such that they are in your favor by adding or subtracting by 6, 6.5 or 7. These are even bets.

As you have noticed, none of these concepts are difficult at all to understand. Once you play a few hands, you can become a pro in betting on football and learn to make better decisions and more importantly, quicker decisions.
