In a period when Dev Anand, Nargis, Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari and a lot of others ruled the Indian film arena, Madhubala, an actress with slender figure and charming face, did find a space in the film industry as a vivacious actress.

Madhubala was born in Muslim religion and was very much attached to her family, particularly to her father, living in Afghanistan, until her death. This affection cost her heavily in several times during her film career but she never regretted. Even if her acting career was too short, Madhubala could create sensation with her different roles and enchanting portrayal.

Madhubala, born in Delhi in 1933, was christened Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehlavi. Mostly, people recognize her by her on screen name rather than the real name. She entered the film field when she was nine years old and met with success in her 16th year with the film ‘Mahal’ because of her scintillating performance.

While she was paired with one of the most well known actor of those times, Ashok Kumar, Madhubala could carry off her role well and was critically acclaimed for enacting a difficult and delicate role elegance. Songs and scenes of this thriller film are still listened to and watched in many houses in the Indian subcontinent.

Madhubala was analyzed having a serious heart ailment after some years in her growing acting career. But she never permitted her poor health to dampen her zest for work or craving for fame and critical acclaim. In fact, the actress never revealed her serious heart problem to the world till ill health while shooting for a movie compelled her to bring it to the open. Even her closest co-workers were quite unaware that the spirited, enthusiastic Madhubala did not enjoy good health.

Although the media and several critics hinted that Madhubala’s beauty outshone her talent, her co-stars firmly disagreed. Dilip Kumar, with whom Madhubala was linked romantically, stated that her talent was never uncovered. Dilip Kumar believed that she was the greatest actress among all others.

The pressure to earn for her big family led this great performer to make many ill advised decisions when it came to choosing films. Even so, numerous classic movies which are even seen today, are considered as mega hits because of her presence, Mughal-E-Azam being one of them. Hollywood director Frank Capra had tried all possible methods but all in vain, to talk to Madhubala about a chance in a Hollywood film. But international popularity came to her through a magazine named Theatre Arts in which she was called as the world’s biggest star.
